Suicide bombing kills 5 at WFP in Islamabad

The bomb that blasted through the World Food Program’s lobby at its heavily fortified office in Islamabad on Monday, killing at least three five, and wounding at least six five, was a stark reminder that the Pakistani Taliban are still a force to be reckoned with.
The explosion occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m., on a leafy street in one of […]

Baitullah Mehsud May Be Dead

ISLAMABAD — If confirmed, this would be a huge victory in the fight against takfiri militants in Pakistan:
U.S. and Pakistani authorities were investigating whether Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud, who has led a violent campaign of suicide attacks and assassinations against Pakistan’s government, was killed in a CIA missile strike.
A Pakistani official said Friday that reports of the militant […]

Ebbing Public Support for Offensive

Al Jazeera English is reporting ebbing public support for the Pakistani Army’s offensive against the Taliban in Swat, Buner and Dir. This fits with what happens with you turn an Army into a wrecking crew. Pakistan doesn’t really do population-centric operations.

Interview with the Taliban

The New York Times has a fascinating story today. It’s an interview with a Taliban logistics tactician the Times has been working on for six months. He finally spills the beans on the Taliban plans for Pakistan and Afghanistan, the strategies they will use and what they fear.
He was clued into the Petraeus doctrine, used to good effect […]

From the Dept. of 'I Told You So'...

A Pakistani Army spokesman said the peace agreement between the militants and the government had given Taliban fighters a chance to regroup — as predicted here. This also follows on the heels of the announcement this weekend by the leader of Tehrik Nifaz-i-Shariat-i-Muhammadi (TNSM), Maulana Sufi Muhammad, in which he denounced Pakistan’s government, Supreme Court, constitution and parliament as un-Islamic and called for sharia to be implemented throughout Pakistan.

US Navy 3, Somali Pirates 0

Wow, mad props to the Navy SEALS who took out those three pirates holding Capt. Richard Phillips. Seriously, that was some James Bond kind of shooting.
But even so, some may find it hard to believe a band of rag-tag, sandal-wearing, AK-toting malcontents can hold off and frustrate the might and fury of the U.S. Navy, but […]

Mullah Nazeer Confirms Taliban Alliance, Threatens Islamabad

On Tuesday, the media arm of al Qaeda, as-Sahab Media, released an almost hour-long video featuring an interview with Mullah Nazzer Ahmad, aka Maulvi Nazir, who is the emir of South Waziristan. This is his first appearance in an as-Sahab video, according to IntelCenter, and is significant in that it ties the Pakistani Taliban leader […]

5 Ships, 48 Hours. Somali Pirates Have Been Busy

This is getting ridiculous. Somali pirates have captured five ships in the last 48 hours right under the noses of the navies of 20 countries — including the United States.
On Saturday, a German freighter was hijacked about 400 miles offshore, between Kenya and the Seychelles, [said Andrew Mwangura, head of the East African Seafarers’ Assistance Program in Mombasa, […]
