Kerry-Lugar’s First Victim

If true, this is total bullshit:
After strong criticism on the Kerry-Lugar bill in Pakistan, the government has decided to replace Pakistan’s ambassador to the US Hussain Haqqani and the announcement in this respect is expected within the next two days.
There’s nothing in the bill reasonable Pakistanis should object to, but blatant demagoguery has apparently won the […]

Afghans in America

While this post has little to do with the insurgency in Afghanistan, it does reflect the project I’ve been working on for the past 10 weeks or so. In my closing days at Stanford University as a Knight Fellow, I decided to explore the Afghan community in Fremont, Calif., which is the largest in the United States. […]

Operation Rahi-i-Rast: One Month On

Yesterday marked the one-month mark for the Pakistani military’s offensive against the Taliban in the Swat region. How are things going? Let’s assess:
This weekend saw the beginning of the battle for Mingora, the valley’s administrative seat. The military is reported to be in control of about half of the city, but some Taliban fighters are […]

Taliban Giving Up? Not Likely.

Hm. This is interesting:
The Taliban on Monday urged civilians to return to the Swat Valley’s main city, promising they would not attack security forces battling for control out of concern for the safety of trapped residents.
The order allegedly comes from Maulana Fazlullah, the Swat Taliban leader, who has ordered his men to stop fighting the Pakistani […]

Traveling this week, and the First Podcast

As you read this, I’m probably on a plane to DC to attend the Jamestown Foundation’s conference, “Pakistan’s Troubled Frontier: The Future of FATA and the NWFP.” The breakout speakers include Ahmed Rashid, Imtiaz Ali (a former Knight Fellow like myself) and David Kilcullen, author of “The Accidental Guerrilla: Fighting Small Wars in the Midst of […]

Slouching Towards Oblivion

There can be no question the Pakistani state is coming under increasing strain from militants, its political system and its international relations. The question is, Where is its breaking point and what can be done to prevent it? And if it comes, then what?

Mullah Nazeer Confirms Taliban Alliance, Threatens Islamabad

On Tuesday, the media arm of al Qaeda, as-Sahab Media, released an almost hour-long video featuring an interview with Mullah Nazzer Ahmad, aka Maulvi Nazir, who is the emir of South Waziristan. This is his first appearance in an as-Sahab video, according to IntelCenter, and is significant in that it ties the Pakistani Taliban leader […]

An Interview with David Kilcullen

The Washington Post has a good interview with COIN theorist and author David Kilcullen. His new book, “The Accidental Guerrilla: Fighting Small Wars in the Midst of a Big One,” is getting a lot of attention among those following and thinking about the Af-Pak theater and this latest interview is definitely food for thought. His comments on Pakistan, particularly should be a wake-up call for anyone still asleep.
